ANCIENT ATHEISM:-
As glorious symbol of ancient rationalism,Charvaka ,taught atheism in ancient India. He was bold enough to teach clearly that soul, god, heaven and release are the false notions and that rituals such as sacrifices were designed by the priests looking for selfish gain to mislead gullible followers. He exposed the loopholes in the ways of rituals by questioning,"pashochnihata swargam jyotishtomay gamishyte....[if the sacrificial beast goes to heaven, why the sacrificer should not sacrifice his own father as the sacrificial animal and reserve his place in heaven]." mratanam api jantonam shradham.....[if the food morsels offered on funeral days reached the ancestors, why not feed here at home those living who are far away traveling].[Chrvak darshan page 4]. He further questioned the concepts of soul, rebirth, afterbirth and other regressive concepts. He said that just as heat is the nature of the fire and cold is the nature of water, consciousness is the nature of the body. After the body perishes and becomes ashes, there is no soul migrating from it.So Charvaka concluded as long as man is alive,he should conform to society's moral laws and enjoy happiness.
